Every device in the house started acting up the week you plugged that extender in. Video calls cut out mid-sentence. Your phone drops the Wi-Fi and demands the password again. The gaming console throws NAT errors at the worst possible moment. You bought the extender to fix one dead spot in the back bedroom, and now the whole house feels worse than before.

The surprise: the extender is probably fine. The problem is how it was set up. And the fix costs nothing.

The short version: Your extender broadcasts the same network name (SSID) as your router, so your devices see two radios wearing the same name, cannot decide which to use, and bounce between them. That bouncing drops your connections. The fix: give the extender its own network name, so the two stop fighting.

Why Two Radios With One Name Breaks Everything

The network name you see when you join Wi-Fi - the one that shows up on your phone as “Home” or “SmithFamily” - is technically called the SSID. It is just the label.

An extender does not create a new internet connection. It connects to your router’s Wi-Fi and re-broadcasts it from wherever you plugged it in. The problem starts at the factory default: most extenders copy the router’s network name exactly. So two radios in your house announce the same name. Your router says “Home,” and so does the extender, a few rooms away.

Your phone or laptop does not know these are two different machines. It sees one network name and connects to whichever radio answered first - often the extender, because it was plugged in closer to where you were standing. And once connected, the device often refuses to let go until the signal collapses.

So here is what happens. You are sitting in the living room, five feet from the router, and your phone is still latched onto the extender in the back hallway. Every packet of data makes the trip twice: phone to extender, extender to router. Walk into the back bedroom and the phone finally notices the router’s signal is stronger and switches over. That switch is a drop. The call cuts. The page fails. The game kicks you.

Roaming between two radios that share a name was never seamless on cheap extenders. Business networks pay extra for equipment and controllers to make hand-offs smooth. Your $30 extender just shouts the same name and hopes devices behave. They do not. They hang on too long, switch too late, and occasionally get confused enough to ask for the password again.

The giveaway: the drops started the day you installed the extender, and they happen all over the house, not just in the room you were trying to fix. That is the signature of two radios fighting, not a weak signal.

The Proof - Two Base Stations, One Name

You do not have to take my word for it. There is a two-minute check, and it needs no technical skill.

Download a free Wi-Fi scanner app - Wi-Fi Analyzer is a common one, though the exact app matters less than having one that lists nearby networks. Walk over to the extender and open the app. You will see your network name listed twice: two entries with the same SSID but different details underneath.

Those two entries are the two radios. Each has its own hardware identifier, called a BSSID or, more usually, a MAC address - a string unique to that radio, like a license plate. Two entries, same name, different plates. That is your smoking gun: two radios broadcasting one network name, and your devices being asked to choose between them.

No scanner app handy? Log into your router’s settings and open the client list. If some of your devices show up twice, or connected through a second access point you did not expect, that is the same evidence. One network name, two radios.

Fix 1 - Separate the Names (Free, Do This First)

The fix for the overlap problem is embarrassingly simple, which is why it is also the first line of the support answer on TP-Link’s own community forum when someone reports this exact chaos: give the extender its own network name.

Log into the extender’s settings - the box tells you how, usually an address like 192.168.0.1 in a browser or the app. Find the wireless settings and change the network name from “Home” to something like “Home_Ext.” Save it, let the extender restart, and the two radios now have different names.

The effect is instant. Your phone, laptop, and TV stay glued to the router and stop noticing the extender exists. No more bouncing, no more drops, no more password demands. In the back bedroom you now see a second network called “Home_Ext.” Join it once, and the dead spot is covered.

That manual step is the trade-off: you join the extender’s network when you are in the dead spot, and the main network everywhere else. Your phone will not auto-switch between rooms anymore, because these are now two different networks. But that is fine. The whole-house drops stop, and the dead spot is still covered when you are in it.

While you are in there: if your extender is dual-band (most are), give each band its own name too, or at least set the extender to a different Wi-Fi channel from the router. Fix 2 - Placement: Half Signal In, Half Signal Out

Separating the names fixes the fighting. It does not fix a badly placed extender. If the extender’s own connection to the router is weak, everything on the extender’s network will be slow no matter what the network is called.

Here is the rule: an extender needs a good signal coming in before it can send a good signal out. Think of it as a relay runner - it cannot hand you a baton it never received. If the extender gets half the router’s signal where it sits, it passes on roughly half of that. Half in, half out.

The classic error is plugging the extender into the dead zone itself - the back bedroom that gets no signal. But an extender in a dead zone is deaf: it grabs a weak, wobbly connection from the router and re-broadcasts a weak, wobbly connection to you. Nothing improved, and now there is an extra radio confusing the whole network.

The right spot is between the router and the dead zone: close enough to the router that the extender shows a strong connection, far enough that it extends coverage toward the room that needs it. The rule of thumb is halfway, then test and nudge. Plug it in, check the signal light, move it a few feet, check again. Fix 3 - When the Extender Was Never the Right Tool

Somewhere around here, you may be realizing something uncomfortable: the extender might have been the wrong tool from the start, and no amount of renaming or repositioning will make it right.

That is not a personal failure. Extenders are the cheapest fix in the Wi-Fi aisle for a reason: they work when the problem is small - one room, one wall away from the router, a modest dead spot that needs a nudge. The moment you need whole-house coverage, thick walls, or two floors of distance, an extender is a bandage you are asking to do surgery.

And one more thought: if the extender has been fighting the router for weeks, the cheapest fix may be to unplug it and live with the dead spot until you can do the job properly. A dead spot you know about is honest. A network that drops every device is not an improvement - it is a tax you pay for a device that is not helping. Unplugging it restores the network you had before.

What to Do Now

  1. Run the proof: open a Wi-Fi scanner app and confirm you see your network name twice - two radios, one name. It takes two minutes and tells you the problem is overlap, not a dying router.
  2. Separate the names: log into the extender and rename its network to something like “Home_Ext.” It is free and it stops the drops. Join the extender network manually when you are in the dead spot.
  3. Check placement: if the extender’s signal to the router is weak, move it halfway between the router and the dead zone. Half signal in, half signal out.
  4. If needed, make the call: if the house is too big or the walls too thick for an extender to ever work, plan the real fix - mesh or a wired solution - and unplug the extender in the meantime.

The cheapest fix is the one that stops the two radios fighting. In most cases that is renaming the extender, and it costs nothing but five minutes. In the worst case, it is admitting the extender was never the right tool and unplugging it. Either way, you stop paying the drop tax today.
