Before you spend 200 dollars on a mesh system or a WiFi extender, spend ten minutes diagnosing the real problem. You might not need to spend anything at all.
The number one mistake in home networking is treating “my WiFi is bad” as a single problem. It is not. It could be a symptom of at least six different things, and the fix depends on which one you actually have.
Buying a mesh system for a channel congestion problem is like buying a new car because your tires are low on air. It might help a little, but it is the wrong solution and you just spent way too much money.
Here is how to figure out what is actually wrong.
Step 1: Isolate the Problem
The single most useful thing you can do: test with a wired connection.
Plug your computer directly into your router with an Ethernet cable. If the internet is fast and stable on the wired connection but slow on WiFi, the problem is your WiFi, not your internet connection. If it is slow on both, the problem is something else - probably your ISP or your router itself.
This one test eliminates half the possible causes. Do it first.

Step 2: Router Placement
WiFi signals travel in a rough sphere. Put your router in a corner, behind a TV, on the floor, or inside a cabinet, and you are cutting the sphere in half. Put it in a central location, elevated, and in the open, and every room gets a better signal.
The fix: move your router. Even five feet can make a dramatic difference. Place it on a shelf, not the floor. Keep it away from large metal objects, fish tanks, and brick walls. If you have a two-story house, put it on the ceiling of the ground floor or the floor of the upper story.
This is the cheapest fix on the list. Try it before you buy anything.
Step 3: Channel Congestion
If you live in an apartment building or a neighborhood with a lot of houses or apartments close together, your router is probably fighting for airtime with a dozen other routers on the same channel. It is like trying to have a conversation in a crowded room. Everyone is talking, nobody can hear.
The fix: change your router’s WiFi channel.
How to do it depends on your router brand, but the general steps are:
- Open a browser and type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (this is your router’s admin page)
- Log in (the password is usually on a sticker on the router)
- Look for WiFi or Wireless settings
- Find the channel setting and switch it to a less crowded one
For 2.4 GHz, use channels 1, 6, or 11 - these are the only ones that do not overlap. For 5 GHz, the options are wider and less congested.
There are free apps that scan the air and tell you which channels are most crowded. WiFi Analyzer on Android is a good one and free. I’ve used it for years. Use it to find the clearest channel, then set your router to it.
Step 4: ISP Throttling or Plan Limits
Some Internet Service Providers throttle your speed after you hit a data cap. Others slow down specific types of traffic (streaming, gaming) during peak hours. The wired test from Step 1 will catch this: if wired is slow, call your ISP.
Check your plan. If you are on a budget plan with a data cap, you might be getting throttled at the end of every month. Upgrading to an unlimited plan might be cheaper than buying new gear.

Step 5: Old or Dying Equipment
Routers get old. They overheat. Their components degrade. A router that was fine three years ago might be struggling today, especially if you have added more devices to your network.
If your router is more than four years old, consider replacing it. Not with a mesh system - just a modern router. A good router costs 100 to 150 dollars and will last four to five years. That is about 3 cents a day.

Step 6: Too Many Devices
Every device on your network shares the available bandwidth. If you have twenty devices - phones, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart bulbs, security cameras, voice assistants - they are all competing. A single active stream can saturate a 50 Mbps connection.
The fix: reduce what is using your network. Pause large downloads during work hours. Set streaming quality to a reasonable level. Turn off WiFi on devices that do not need it.

If you have gone through these six steps and your problem is that a specific part of your house gets no signal - the far bedroom, the basement, the garden - then you might need an extender or a mesh system. But only after you have diagnosed the real problem.

The Bottom Line
“My WiFi is bad” is a symptom, not a problem. Diagnose before you buy. The wired test alone will tell you whether the issue is your network or your internet connection. Router placement is free and often fixes more than half of all WiFi problems. Everything else on this list costs less than a mesh system and targets the actual cause.
